New icons are coming online. I am publishing some on  a blog named IDhumanism. Feel free to download icons  or attributes to developed our contemporary « symbolic lingua franca », to use the words of Edwars A.Maser (Baroque and Rococo, Pictorial Imagery, Cesare RipaDover Publications, New York, 1971) .

Creating icons should means creating the next reality!

There are some images captured during the ift event in Osaka (Sound and Icon Workshop). I want to say thank you to every people who was present to created that experience of art.

Now, the Web Iconologia project that I am developping  has a new dimension : throught you I understand the power of living visual language. Icons take meaning because we use theme in daily life… I do not know yet, What I will do with that idea. So,  before the end of that year, I will publish  an sample of Web Iconologia online. The human values icons you produced during that WorkShops will be a part of that Web Iconologia 2009.

So the Web  Iconologia is a simple proposition to inject  new icons as new vocabulary and then proposing life dimensions.

Enjoy art and life !

Jeanne Landry-Belleu
(For English readers, please scroll down)

On 2009.10.23-24 @ ift presented a workshop with two artist; Jeann Landry-Belleu and Mamoru Okuno.

Jeanne works on the issues related to Web culture and especially the icons in relation to the 15th Century italian writer Cesare Ripa(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cesare_Ripa). She introduced her ideas about the Web and her current research on icons.
If the images surrounding our society can be seen as the reflections of what human reality today, then analyzing images can be a search for Humanity. Jeanne tried to collect icons on Web to understand the human values among the Web culture. Then she started creating new icons to project her ideals on Web, where new form of communication are continuously updated. At the end of the workshop, all of the participants made their own icons representing various human values, and they will be up on Web for people to download freely. The artist’s intention is to see if they would effect the future of our world.

Sound artist Mamoru introduced one of his “etude for everyday objects and practices” His “etude” is an attempt of create art work by a simple idea; recode, decode, remix with everyday elements which often are considered economically worthless. The “etude no.12 variation for eating Nori paste together” involves people eating Nori paste on a Japanese cracker with other seasoning as snack. During the workshop, Mamoru made these snacks for participants to enjoy eating. At the end, he showed the process of empty glass bottle of Nori paste becoming “etude no.12”, a sound object. People passed the object that was put on a small light box one by one to listen to the sound. The sharing of the process transcend the object from to-be-a-garbage into a work of art.

Cell icons in Japan

Description of Iconology WorkShop:

Icons are deeply related with our daily life.

Icons are these images wich are used as tool, languages or attributes to manage devices and navigated inside systems such as the Web.

So the workshop I am proposing shall explore  how composed human values with icons from Web or simply from Cell phone application, such as Rss feed(Wifi), refresh symbol, stars, bubble, chains, earth, just to say few examples.example of Web Icons_2009

Notes :

Today, my work  is in the field Web art . My art research is a study about the parallel between humanism and the Web 2.0 culture.

To figure out the humanism form, my approach consists in a constant observation of Web culture. I visited and explored as well as I can the popular Web plateforms related with the social network. I mean : Facebook, Myspace, Youtube, Naver, Mixi, Google, Cyworld, Wikipedia, blogs and also cellphones applications related with that network.

In the same time I am work to upgrade my own understanding of humanism. That’s how I could composed my first version of Web Iconology (2 weeks  residency in Haslla art World ). This iconology reveals my present humanism’s conception.

Well, as I did that icons, I invited you to use icons from the Web and from cell phones to figure out your idea of human values.

Moreover, we can understand that icons project as a kind of Kanjis.
